A'DAM LOOKOUT — Multilingual Wayfinding & UX

How design breaks through an international language barrier 100 metres above Amsterdam.

The Challenge

A'DAM LOOKOUT is an iconic Amsterdam landmark, but the building — a former office — wasn't designed for the daily flood of thousands of international visitors. Around half of the guests speak neither Dutch nor English, so the existing signage is missed or misunderstood. The result: confusion, bottlenecks at the lifts, stressed visitors and overloaded staff.

"How can I effectively support LOOKOUT visitors during their visit, with as little language dependency as possible, so they have a clear, engaging experience and know what to expect?"

Research & Insights

For several weeks I acted as a fly-on-the-wall on the floor and interviewed three stakeholder groups: the founders (Ralf & Sven), floor staff, and visitors themselves. Guests are often stressed and time-pressed — many combine LOOKOUT with a flight, luggage in hand. Staff asked for one thing: use icons.

The weekend tourist

Comes for atmosphere, thrills and drinks.

The influencer

Driven by social media — hunting the best photo spots.

The quiet visitor

Wants to relax and enjoy the view.

The cycling traveller

Takes their time, independent, documents the surroundings.

Strategy & Concept

The solution had to stand out in a busy space, require no prior knowledge of gadgets, and work even without technology. After prototyping five concepts — including AR and wearables — a hybrid approach won: physical wayfinding on the floor paired with a supporting digital web app.

The Solution

Floor lines and wall signage installed on site

Floor lines & universal icons

Coloured printed lines on the floor guide visitors from the entrance to each activity (Swing, VR, Madam/Skybar, Cinema). Colours mirror LOOKOUT's brand; the self-illustrated icons speak without words.

'Find Your Way' poster & flyer

At the entrance and key bottlenecks, clear 3D floor plans give an analogue overview. Splitting the map into two logical parts (lower vs. upper floors) removed visual overload.

Companion web app

Reachable via QR — the app mirrors the physical lines. User tests led to bigger buttons and a clear 'Click Here' cue, plus an in-app photo screen so visitors can capture and share the moment on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook.

Result & Impact

The final concept was met with overwhelmingly positive stakeholder feedback. Sven, the web-app developer, showed serious interest in developing and implementing the solution. Floor staff responded enthusiastically — the design directly answers their most time-consuming question: 'Where do I need to go?' Design becomes a universal language, turning LOOKOUT from a stressful maze into a streamlined, memorable experience.

By observing on the floor for days, I discovered that the user's psychological state — stress, luggage, a plane to catch — weighs heavier than the aesthetics of a sign. UX design doesn't stop at the screen; it starts on the physical floor."

A'DAM Lookout — Wayfinding

My graduation project: a self-developed wayfinding system for A'DAM Lookout, a multi-layered tourist landmark in Amsterdam. Based on on-site guest research, I designed an isometric floor map that helps visitors orient themselves across the building's many levels.

I'm Yanne — an innovative, problem-solving media and visual designer based in Zaandam. Backed by a BSc in Communication and Multimedia Design, I combine a passion for visual creation with hands-on expertise in marketing and corporate communication.
